Philosophy of Nursing

NURS 401: Introduction to Professional Development for Baccalaureate Nursing Practice

Purpose of Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to enable the student to discover his or her personal philosophy of nursing, as it exists at the beginning of the academic journey toward the BSN.

Student Approach to Assignment

This assignment was a very personal opportunity to express my values and beliefs through my position as a nurse. Prior to the writing of this assignment, I realized that I did not have a solid philosophy for how and why I chose nursing, so this paper helped me formulate that concept for myself. It reflects many of my personal Christian values, such as self-sacrifice, service to others, compassion, and showing grace towards people. I viewed this assignment as an opportunity to solidify my own motivation for being a nurse, and I also wanted to portray my values very strongly in this philosophy assignment, as they influence my life so pivotally.

Reason for Inclusion of this Assignment in the Portfolio

This assignment is an instrumental cornerstone to my portfolio, as it unfolds the personal purpose to my whole nursing career and defines my core beliefs and values as a nurse. It not only defines what my beliefs are as a nurse, but as an individual as well.

Domain 10: Personal, Professional, and Leadership Development

(33) Explores personal philosophy of nursing and educational goals at the beginning and end of the program.

This assignment met these criteria by defining my personal nursing philosophy at the beginning of the program in NURS 401. It specifically sites what my philosophy is at the end of the first section, as well as what my definition and purpose of nursing is in the following two sections. The assignment is also a reflection of what my personal philosophy is at the end of the program, as I reviewed what had been written prior to inclusion in the portfolio, and found that it still shapes how I view nursing today.

Domain 9: Professionalism

(41) Apply principles of professional nursing ethics and human rights in patient care and professional situations.

This assignment met this criterion when referencing various nursing philosophies in the section titled ‘Nursing Relationships’. I applied Jean Watson’s philosophy of transpersonal caring to my nursing relationship with my patients, the community, and other nurses. Watson’s philosophy reflects many professional nursing ethical standards, and several examples of how I believe they should be applied are listed in this section.

Domain 10: Personal, Professional, and Leadership Development

(43) Demonstrates accountability for one’s own professional practice.

I believe this assignment meets this criterion most strongly in the ‘Moral Principles’ section, where I discuss my personal convictions that guide my professional practice. I reference several moral principles such as self-sacrifice, kindness, giving the benefit of the doubt, and compassion, and give examples of how I use these in practice.

Professional & Educational Goals

Past Goals

At the beginning of my RN-BSN journey, my goals for my professional and educational life included:

  • improvement of evidence-based research

  • conduction of my own nursing research

  • be involved in nursing leadership on my unit

  • become a wound care certified nurse

I can gratefully say that all except one of these goals were met through my BSN education. I have indeed gained more experience in evidence-based research with improvement on defining and discerning quality research articles. I have conducted my own research through the teaching project on my unit, and have become involved in nursing leadership by promoting to a resource charge nurse on the unit. The only goal I have not accomplished is to become a wound care certified nurse, which is still a passion of mine, though may end up being accomplished in later years.

Future Goals

Nearing the end of my degree, my goals for my future career in education and profession have changed, as my prior goals were almost all met. While I still have a passion for wound care nursing, I have realized that I still want more time at the bedside before moving into that field. Therefore, my main professional and educational goal during this time is to transfer to the cardiac intensive care unit at my hospital. From there, I want to increase in my skill and knowledge of intensive care nursing by caring for patients in critical condition.

A final goal that may compete or come after wound care has also emerged through this RN-BSN program. Through the NURS 492 class, I had the opportunity to volunteer community hours in a local food pantry, which opened my heart and mind to the countless needs in my own community for education, health promotion, and medical services. Because of this, I can see myself advocating for this patient population by becoming a community health nurse in the further future.
