Teaching Project Summary
NURS 402: Role Development for Baccalaureate Nurse as
Educator
Purpose of Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to provide the student the opportunity to summarize in detail the development, implementation, and evaluation of an instructional intervention for a specific patient or professional group.

Student Approach to Assignment
This teaching project was unique to me as it summarized my personal teaching project to a group of peers in my workplace. The assignment reflected my personal interest in implementing proper I&O management on my unit, which I cite as a frequent issue that I personally identify when caring for my patients and working with my coworkers as a team on this. In the final reflection section of this paper, I learned my personal weaknesses when it comes to providing education, such as fear of correcting others, and developing and adhering to a teaching plan. I also learned how to adjust my teaching plan during the actual implementation phase based on interruptions, questions, or unforeseeable circumstances, which I discuss in several sections of the paper.

Reason for Inclusion of this Assignment in the Portfolio
This summary is important to include in my portfolio, as it shows an example of my practice in teaching clinical interventions. As teaching is an invaluable task that nurses are responsible for, this summary is an example of how I am applying that to my practice.
Domain 2: Person-Centered Care
(6) Communicates effectively with individuals.
Within this assignment, I summarize how I identified a problem that needed addressing in my workplace (improper intake and output measurement and documentation) and developed a tool to assess the learning and informational needs of my target audience: my coworkers. This tool was in the form of a survey, where I discovered what ways to best teach and communicate this educational material to them by asking questions such as how they best learn new material. I then utilized this tool to structure my teaching session. This shows how I learned to communicate effectively to the group based on my audience’s learning needs.

Domain 2: Person-Centered Care &
Domain 3: Population Health &
Domain 10: Personal, Professional & Leadership Development
(14) Revises actions plans and goals based on evidence or responses to interventions.
As previously mentioned, this paper mentions how I learned to modify my plan of teaching based on the responses and feedback I was receiving from my group of learners. Revisions included on-the-spot judgement calls to cut back some material, such as the discussion of populations which do not require strict I&Os, and changing a hands-on learning portion to a verbal discussion based on the time constraint and low participation.

Domain 2: Person-Centered Care &
Domain 7: Systems-based Practice
(19) Provides teaching to patients and/or professionals about health care procedures and technologies in preparation for and following nursing or medical interventions.
This summary meets this objective by discussing how I implemented teaching material to a group of other nurses. The teaching material included the nursing intervention of measuring and documenting I&Os, and provided five different options for accurate management of the I&Os: using a vital signs machine, a dry erase sheet, relying on other members of the healthcare team such as dietary, linking an IV pump to the chart, and physical charting on the flowsheets of a chart.
Domain 4: Scholarship for Nursing Discipline
(28) Communicates scholarly findings with colleagues.
Within this teaching project, I extensively discuss with my coworkers the evidence behind my project. The paper includes in-text citations from sources which present the current issue of proper I&O monitoring, and I communicate this to my peers within the teaching session both verbally and via visual presentation. This is discussed mostly in my first objective to list four or more patient groups that require I&Os based on the Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust table, which I provide a handout for my peers to view as well. I also mention in this summary how I provided more visual communication of the table by drawing it on a whiteboard.
